How My Hobby Turned Into A Business -by Les
Back in the 1970s I stumbled into the world of screen printing somewhat by accident. Being a person who thinks along the lines of, "I think I can do that" and working with kids on a community education project without a budget, I decided to print some t-shirts. So I bought a kit and made a total mess of things. As they say if at first you don't succeed, read the directions! Off to the library I went and came home with a book that opens with this statement: First thing to do is get rid of the craft kit you bought and buy the real stuff you need. It worked, but then I was hooked. Building my own presses, hand cutting film, and stretching screens. I even used our own oven as a dryer (scorcher!) putting the t-shirts on cookie sheets. You name it I did it all the hard way but loved it.

Phase two started when other people started asking if we can print for them so we took it to the next level and bought equipment from a shop that was going out of business. Back to the books again to find out how to use all the cool stuff we bought. The Encyclopedia of Screen Printing had most of the information to describe the methods for the equipment we had just purchased. At this point we had a four station press which would allow us to print up to four colors, a camera, film developing capability and a conveyor dryer. Wow! A crack at the big time!

We still have some of the original equipment, but time flies by and things in our industry also change. So we upgrade as we go to maintain high quality hand crafted products. There's no more camera work or film developing. All artwork ends up on the computer and printed out on positive film. I still burn screens and pull the squeegee though. Most of all I love to see new designs come to live. As our tag line says, "We show your true colors!"

I hope we can do something special for you.
Leann Olsen—Office Manager
Leann officially joined Valley Screen Printing in October of 2003 when she returned to the Twin Cities after living in Spearfish, South Dakota for four years. As the mother of a one year old girl it seemed a perfect opportunity to have a job that would allow her to be a mom at the same time. It would also be a great opportunity to bring Valley Screen Printing into the 21st century. Times have changed a lot, especially where artwork for screen printing is concerned.

Leann has taken on the duties of customer service, graphic designer, ordering, product research, marketing, back-up printer, web content managment, as well as creative input for our personalized diapers. She is also the creator and designer for Noodletogs kids clothing.

Lauren Strom —Support Staff
Born in Walker, MN. Left lumberjack country at age 18 to obtain a BA in Visual Arts, and a tan, at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg FL. Lauren married and settled in Minneapolis in 2004, ready to make her fortune as an artist. In 2010 she became an official key-carrying, rent-paying, door-opening studio artist in the Casket Arts Building in Minneapolis. A member of NEMAA, SooVAC, and the St. Paul Art Collective, Lauren can never exactly nail down what type of art she does.

Screen printing is an extension of her professional interests. When there's time, Lauren squeezes ink onto a few of her own projects. Currently Lauren has four designs for sale in various shops on Etsy and around the city, including her studio. These include BikeLove ArTshirts, Owls, Artist Birds, and Dino Birds.
